What Temperature to Leave a Vacant House in Summer

If you’ll be spending a week or two away from home, make sure to take some steps before you leave to keep your energy bills down. You may be wondering what temperature to leave your vacant house in the Summer while you’re on vacation. These tips will help decrease your energy bills and save you money.

Our expert technicians are here for youSchedule Online Today

Here are some tips.

Close Blinds and Curtains

Sunlight beaming in through the windows can really heat up your home and cause your air conditioning to work harder. So close those blinds before you leave to keep your rooms cooler while you’re gone.

Adjust Your Thermostat

What should I set my thermostat and air conditioner to when I’m not home in the Summer? If your thermostat is usually set to 75 when you’re home, reset it to only click on if the temperature gets above 80. You don’t want to turn it completely off,  as too much humidity can cause problems with wood floors and cabinets swelling, and can lead to mildew in the house. Raising the thermostat just 5 degrees will save on energy bills and keep your home from damage.

If you have a smart thermostat, you can set it to lower to a comfortable temperature on the day you’ll arrive home.

Don’t Forget About the Water Heater

To save even more money on your electric bill, turn down the water heater to the lowest setting. Just make sure to remember to turn it back up before you take that first shower when you get home!

Unplug to Save Even More

You wouldn’t think that the TV, toaster, and microwave require much energy while not in use, but if they’re plugged in, it’s still costing you money. Do a final check before you leave for vacation to make sure everything is unplugged.
