This week on the Today show, Dr. Oz addressed several ways to get more quality sleep. He recommends dimming lights 30 minutes before going to bed, not eating for three hours before bedtime, and lowering the thermostat to a cooler temperature. What's the best temperature for sleep? According to Dr. Oz, it's nothing higher than 68 degrees, and even as low as 62 degrees. He says if you're arguing with your spouse about the best temperature, the lower number should win. Dr. Oz isn't the only one who believes the best temperature for sleeping is between 62 to 68 degrees. The National Sleep Foundation explains that throughout the day, the body's temperature rises and falls, and this pattern goes right into your sleep cycle. When you're sleepy in the evening, your temperature starts to drop and gets lower through the night. Your body reaches its lowest level around 5:00 a.m. and then starts to climb. The air temperature in the bedroom can make or break how well you rest, because a room that's too warm can disrupt your body's natural dip and make you too uncomfortable to get a quality sleep. A room that's too cold won't be comfortable. To avoid insomnia or sleeping issues, set the thermostat in your home to the best temperature for sleep.
Set Your Thermostat to Stay Cool At Night
If you've been struggling with getting a good night's sleep, we recommend setting your thermostat to the best sleeping temperatures between 62 to 68 degrees. Since many of us are busy and have different schedules each evening, consider purchasing a programmable thermometer and setting it to drop to your preferred temperature each night at the same time. This will prevent your furnace from running too often throughout the night and making your bedroom too warm for quality sleep.
