Need a New Air Conditioning Unit Before the Weather Heats Up?

If your AC unit has gone kaput, you’re probably anxious to run out and buy something before hot temperatures arrive. But it’s important to know what you’re looking for when you begin shopping to be sure you’re getting the right equipment for your home. Here are a few questions you may have about what to look for in a new AC.

Our expert technicians are here for youSchedule Online Today

Does the size of my new air conditioning unit matter?

Absolutely. The sizing of HVAC equipment is important when it comes to your comfort level and energy use. A unit that is over-capacity won’t run as frequently or as long when it does run, and this could lead to poor humidity control, temperature variations or noticeable cycling.

And if you choose an AC unit that is undersized for your home, it won’t be able to cool your home on extremely hot days.

How can I tell what size HVAC system to buy?

Depending on the construction of your home, one ton of air conditioning can cool from 300 to 800 square feet of home. The best way to be sure you’re getting the right size is to have an HVAC technician inspect your home and talk to you about your budget.

Is a higher capacity system better?

No. A system with too much capacity will run in short cycles, turning on and off repeatedly, causing it to be less efficient. Since an air conditioner can only remove humidity when it’s running, a system with shorter run cycles doesn’t remove humidity from the air very well.

How do I measure the efficiency of a new cooling system?

You should always ask about Efficiency Ratings to be sure you’re getting the most efficient system.  The SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating tells you the amount of cooling your system will deliver per dollar spent on electricity.  The SEER rating can range from 13 to 17, with the higher number being more efficient and costing less to operate.

Also, be sure to watch for the ENERGY STAR label to be sure your unit meets standard government minimums for high-efficiency performance.
